DISABLED ATHLETES RAISE MONEY FOR ATHLETES BURLINGTON, Vermont (August 26, 2009) With three weeks to go until the Kelly Brush Century Ride, Team Ride-On, a team of adaptive hand cyclists, has raised enough money to donate one hand cycle to an adaptive athlete and is well on the way to raising enough to get a second adaptive athlete cranking down the road. "We've received tremendous community support towards our team’s goal of improving the lives of those with spinal cord injury one hand cycle at a time," said Patrick Standen, Team Ride-On leader and president of the board of the Northeast Disabled Athletic Association. "Many of us on Team Ride-On are out on the road thanks to Kelly Brush Foundation grants that helped us purchase adaptive equipment. This is a nice way for us to pass it forward so other adaptive athletes can do the same." Team Ride On is one of over a dozen teams signed up for the fourth annual Kelly Brush Century Ride on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Middlebury, Vt. The team includes celebrity paralympians Chris Waddell of Park City, Utah and Sarah Will of Edwards, Colo. Both mono skiers are the most decorated paralympians in their disciplines and both attended college in Vermont. The 100-mile bicycle ride benefits spinal cord injury prevention and awareness and funds grants for adaptive sports equipment for those with SCI. The ride also supports the foundation’s grants for improving ski racing safety. Over 360 riders participated in last year's ride raising $135,000. Team Ride-On, comprised of 17 adaptive athletes using hand cycles, has raised over $8,500 so far, exceeding the $5,000 needed to purchase one adaptive hand cycle. Now the team hopes to raise enough to donate a second cycle in the team’s name. For every $5,000 raised as part of the Kelly Brush Century Ride the foundation will donate a hand cycle on behalf of the team or individual. Cyclists may participate in the scenic ride through the Lake Champlain Valley, riding either 25, 50 or 100 miles, competing to raise the most money. Riders may also enter as a fundraising team. The century ride supports the Kelly Brush Foundation, founded by Middlebury College graduate and ski team member Kelly Brush. The foundation raises awareness about ski racing safety, provides adaptive sports equipment for those with spinal cord injury, works to advance research on spinal cord injury, works to increase ski racing safety through grants to clubs throughout the USA and supports the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team. The Kelly Brush Century Ride is made possible thanks to the generosity of sponsors including: Audi, KeyBank, Saatchi and Saatchi and Champlain Investment Partners. About the foundation: The Kelly Brush Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving ski racing safety, enhancing the quality of life for those with spinal cord injury(SCI) through providing adaptive sports equipment, advancing scientific research on SCI and supporting the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team. Kelly Brush, together with her family, started the foundation in 2006 after she sustained a severe spinal cord injury while racing in NCAA Div. 1 competition as a member of the Middlebury College Ski Team in Vermont. The Kelly Brush Foundation affirms Kelly’s ongoing commitment to live life on her own terms and better the lives of others living with SCI. www.kellybrushfoundation.org TEAM RIDE-ON
